Hawksbills, which rarely exceed 55 kg, are hunted illegally for the tourist trade: one occasionally still sees stuffed turtle specimens for sale. FWS will consider comments received or postmarked on or before July 24, 2014. Found in many habitats - grassland, chaparral, agricultural, riparian, woodlands, from sea level to the mountains. The study indicates that the pet trade is the number one cause of the species introductions. Australia was still connected to Antarctica, though, and India had not yet joined Asia.

Reptiles have scaly skin and live mostly on land except for exceptions such as crocodiles, turtles and iguanas. Geckos do not possess eyelids; rather, their eyes are covered by transparent membranes they clean with their long tongues, according to the Ark in Space website. This is referred to as behavioral thermoregulation where the animal changes posture or physical location to raise body temperature for metabolic activity. Additionally, some desert reptiles can tolerate quite high body temperatures; the normal temperature of the desert iguana, for example, is 114 F (44 C).

Copperheads give birth to live young (meaning the eggs hatched inside the mother). Snakes are also ectothermic, or cold-blooded, and must rely on natural conditions to maintain an optimum body temperature. Dundee and Rossman (1989) included the Alabama Map Turtle (Graptemys pulchra) as native to Louisiana in the eastern Florida Parishes. It’s so good in ice cream floats and homemade popsicles too!

A Wood Frog's Life (Nature Upclose)

If the smoky frog's loud hissing, inflated body, and poisonous secretions don't manage to scare off its predator, it has another ingenious defense: when captured it emits a loud scream. In this way, they take advantage of markings that bring back unpleasant memories for predators. Though secretive and primarily nocturnal, it is often seen around houses when debris or sod is removed, or it falls into a swimming pool and cannot get out. More recently a respiratory disease has been found in some tortoise populations, and it is suspected the disease may have been introduced by infected tortoise pets whose owners have returned them to the wild.

Given the name Archeopteryx lithographica the fossil appeared to combine features of both birds and reptiles: a reptilian skeleton, accompanied by the clear impression of feathers. There are more than 100 species of jawless vertebrate. I just love this picture of the lizard I found at Big South Fork on an unseasonably warm December day in 2006. For a true spin on the turtle design, the highly aquatic and swift-swimming softshells, such as the Spiny Softshell (shown right), have flat, rubbery shells of mostly cartilage.
